About IIPP
The Irish Institute of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (IIPP) develops and delivers professional training in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy. It also operates the Irish Psychoanalytic Clinic which provides high-quality, low-cost psychoanalytic psychotherapy to the public.

Background to our organisation
The Irish Institute of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (IIPP) was established in 1993 by a group of practising psychotherapists who sought to establish a dedicated training programme in psychoanalytic psychotherapy in Ireland.
The Institute’s founding members included Felicity Casserly, Nessa Childers, Michael Fitzgerald, Rita McCarthy, Anne Murphy, Ellen O'Malley Dunlop, Mary Pyle, and Ross Skelton. The first intake of students to the training programme took place in October 1993.
The IIPP also established the Irish Psychoanalytic Clinic, which has provided low-cost psychoanalytic psychotherapy services since its creation in 1993.
The IIPP continues to develop and offer training programs in psychoanalytic psychotherapy, contributing to the field in Ireland. New students are welcomed into the training programme every two years, as part of the four-year clinical training jointly coordinated with Trinity College Dublin.

Our Journey Since 1993
1993
The Irish Institute of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (IIPP) was established by a group of practicing Psychotherapists, with the aim of developing training in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy. A three-year Diploma course in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy was set up and run initially by the IIPP. The same year, the Irish Psychoanalytic Clinic was also established.
1996-1997
Discussions had begun with Trinity College Dublin about developing the course as an MSc, within the Department of Psychiatry. This was accomplished in 1997.
1999
The first cohort of students to undertake the MSc. in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy graduated. Also at this time, the Institute was formed as a limited company.
2008
A directive from the European Association for Psychotherapy stipulated a four-year training programme to meet accreditation standards, and so the training run jointly by Trinity College and the IIPP became a four-year programme.
2011-2012
The first students to complete the four-year training programme graduated. The Institute now offered a four-year continuous training in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy with the first two years of the training comprising an MSc in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy from Trinity College Dublin followed by two years clinical training in the Institute.
Today
The combined IIPP/Trinity College programme continues to take in new students every two years and train them to the highest clinical standards. Our graduates are working all over Ireland today.
