PROFESSIONAL TRAINING PROGRAMME

TRAINING PROGRAMME

  The course provides a comprehensive conceptual and critical understanding of the theoretical basis of psychoanalytic psychotherapy, as well as a thorough training in the application of psychoanalytic theory to psychoanalytic clinical practice with adults.

Course Structure

  The course is part-time, Tuesday evening and all day Wednesday during the academic terms and extending over 3 years. Additional hours are required for personal analysis, infant observation and, as the course progresses, for clinical work and supervision. Progress through the course is at the discretion of the Training Committee and is based on continuous assessment.

Course Components

1. Personal Therapy. Students are required to undergo personal psychoanalytic psychotherapy with an approved training psychotherapist at least twice a week until the completion of clinical training requirements. A list of approved training psychotherapists may be obtained from the course administrator.
2. Theoretical Seminars. The works of the major psychoanalytic theorists are covered, with particular reference to Freud, Klein and the Independent tradition.
3. Clinical Seminars. Assessment, selection, and treatment issues are dealt with in lecture and discussion format.
4. Group Experience. Students participate in an experiential group for the duration of the course.
5. Infant Observation. This involves a course of weekly observation of a baby and mother in the home for 2 years. Detailed observations are discussed in a weekly seminar.
6. Supervised Clinical Work. Students are required to work with 2 clients during the second and third years of the course, subject to satisfactory completion of the first year. They are expected to treat 2 clients, one client for 1 year and the other for 2 years. One client must be seen weekly and the other twice weekly. Students are required to attend weekly individual supervision with an allocated supervisor for a total of at least eighty hours.
7. Academic Assessment. Students are required to submit term essays, a major infant observation paper, a 3-hour written examination and a thesis subject to a Viva.

REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION

  Applications are invited from candidates who are graduates of recognised University courses, with a 1st or 2nd class Honours degree. In certain circumstances, applications may be considered on the basis of professional experience and/or qualification.

QUALIFICATION

  M.Sc. in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (adult) is awarded on successful completion of the academic components of the 3-year programme and satisfactory progress in the ongoing clinical training. On successful completion of clinical training a Dip. in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy may be awarded by the Irish Institute of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (IIPP).

  This qualification forms a part of the requirements for full membership of the professional accrediting body, the Irish Forum for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (IFPP) a section of the Irish Council of Psychotherapy (ICP). Application can also be made to the European Association for Psychotherapy (EAP).

APPLICATIONS

  The course is run on a 3-year cycle. The next course will begin in October 2011. Applications must reach the Graduate Admissions Office, TCD, by 30th June 2011.

FEES

  The course fees are in the region of €7,300 per year subject to confirmation. In addition, provision should be made for supervision and personal analysis.
